Please contact us through our Contact Form. Include your user name, password (if known), and the email address associated with your account. Upon reading your request, we will send a confirmation email to the email address on record and ask you to respond to it.
When we receive your response, we will delete your account and all associated songs, images, and account profile information from our server. The site administrator retains an off-site copy of your original signup information (this includes your user name, email address and your IP address at the time of signup) for legal reasons. Any posts in our forums or comments in our comment areas will be retained unless you specifically request to have them deleted.
We make every effort to delete accounts within 48 hours of the first request but may require more time if we are experiencing unusual circumstances.
Why do I need to register to submit music to your site?
We ask musicians to register because we think it is the best way for us to obtain your music. Uploading your music should take about the same amount of time it would take to prep and mail a CD submission, but it doesn't cost you a thing! We want to help you minimize the costs you incur to get your music to our listeners.
We no longer accept requests to review your music at another Internet site because we have often been disappointed when we take the time to review the music and let the band know we'd love to have them, only to have the band never show up on the site after they were invited. By requiring registration and having you complete the minimum requirements of an Artist Page, we can assure that your music will be available for us to play as soon as we review it.
When I press the submit button after entering my information, it just clears the information and refreshes the same page.
In order to register, login, or make changes within your Account Manager, cookies must be enabled in your browser. Although the Spyware software manufacturers have people running scared about cookies, cookies are not evil! Cookies are the only way that our server can pass a sequence of user actions and server responses (known as a "session") back and forth. Servers are dumb brutes and will immediately forget what you just told them unless you give them a cookie as a reward. You can enable cookies in most browsers by going to Tools > Options (or Internet Options) and choosing the Privacy tab.
I've tried to register, but I keep getting the message "ERROR: Invalid Image Validation Code received" no matter how carefully I type the code.
Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) use a proxy to deliver your Internet pages. This can prevent you from establishing a registration session with our server. We use the Image Validation Code to prevent spammers and bots from registering on our site. Assuming you are a real human being, we will be happy to send you an alternate link for registration. Send an email to jillnojack(remove this section before sending)@indieheart.com. We'll be happy to help out.
I didn't get the validation email OR I click the validation link but it doesn't validate my account.
Some email providers don't like automated emails from our site and inaccurately send it to your spam filter, even though you requested the email. If you have access to your spam filter folder, please look in that folder for your validation email. You will also want to mark email from IndieHeart.com as not being spam.
If you received your validation email but the link doesn't work, this is because some email programs break the link by adding spaces in the url. You can copy and paste the url into the address bar in your browser and then check for and remove any spaces.
I'm having a problem registering that isn't addressed in the FAQ.
We'd be happy to help through our Contact Form. Please give us as much information as you can so that we can do our best to resolve the problem. Information we will need includes the User Name you are trying to create, the email address you are using to register, any error message you recieve, and the browser you are using (Internet Explorer, FireFox, etc.) It is also terrifically helpful if you let us know the operating system you use (Windows Vista, XP, MAC version, etc).
What kind of music do you accept for the site and your broadcasts?
The TransAtlantic Acoustic Show Podcast features Acoustic music in a range of genres with a few cheats for great songs with an electrified instrument or two in the background. We play Traditional to Contemporary Folk forms, Acoustic Alt. Country, and Acoustic Blues as well as just about anything else you can think of that is primarily Acoustic. We dig singer/songwriters who craft a nice melody surrounding intelligent lyrics. We may also play a few classically influenced and New Age-y pieces based around either piano or guitar.
We have musicians on the site who record on inexpensive equipment in their bedrooms as well as musicians on well-known Indie labels who record in professional studios with a slew of engineers. We don't discriminate by the cost of your production, but we do have two disqualifiers: noisy tracks with clicks, pops, and hiss on the low-cost side and overcompression/overmastering on the high-end side.
We are no longer accepting music for the Heart of the Night Show, although we continue to have many non-acoustic artists on the site. However, we will not be accepting new artists onto the site who do not have acoustic music available.
Why do you remove an Artist Account/Artist Page if the music isn't selected for airplay?
Our Artist Pages are designed specifically to help our listeners follow up on the music they hear in our shows. Although IndieHeart has some of the features of an Online Music Distribution (OMD) site due to those pages, our primary emphasis is Internet Radio and Podcasting. We simply don't have the financial resources or available time to support a site with thousands of Artists. However, if we didn't select your music for airplay this time, you can always submit to us again when you have new music. Please don't hesitate to go through the submission process again if you have recorded a new set of songs that you think will change our minds!
Will you let us know why you didn't select our music for airplay?
Nope. We are big wimps and just send a form letter to Artists whose music has not been selected. Primarily, this is because we hate ever having to send anyone a rejection letter. We would never want to accidently discourage anyone in their musical efforts by some foolish thing we might say.
So, what's this whole Podcast thing, anyway?
Jill Nojack wrote a pretty comprehensive article for new Podcast listeners a while back called Podcasts: Time-Shifted Radio for the Google Knol site. It should answer just about any questions you have if you haven't listened to Podcasts before.
I'd like to listen to some of your older podcasts, but they aren't available on the current feed.
To keep our server costs down, we only keep the last six or so shows available on the feeds. Some of our older podcasts are available as fully legal torrents from Mininova.com. The link to Mininova we provide will take you directly to our upload listings on the Mininova site. We plan to eventually upload all of our past shows to Mininova, although we strongly discourage the use of torrent software for the illegal download of copyrighted materials. We firmly believe in the rights of creators to decide how their work is distributed.
When I press the login button, it just clears my User Name and password and doesn't log me in.
Please see the question about information being cleared when trying to register in the "Listener Registration" section.
Every time I try to upload a song, it cuts off before the upload is finished.
First, please make sure that you don't click out of the upload page until you get a "Success" message. It may look like nothing is happening, but until you see "Success" the upload is still being processed.
Second, if you are on a dial up connection, you already know that it can take an extremely long period of time to upload a song and just about anything you do on your PC while waiting can interfere with the upload. If you are on a dial up connection and have tried and failed to upload music to us, contact us and we'll do our best to help you.
Finally, some ISPs use a proxy that makes it difficult to establish a session with our server for the full song upload. Once again, if you have tried a couple of times and failed, please get in touch with us through our handy Contact Form and we'll be happy to assist.
When I enter text in the Band Bio (or other) fields, it displays with weird symbols I didn't put there.
This can happen when you copy and paste from a document that contains hidden control characters. Microsoft Word documents are particularly known for this. Our software does its best to remove these characters, but it is not always successful with the pesky things. Chances are very good you will have the same problem at some of your other sites. To prevent the problem in the future, retype your document into a basic text editor (Notepad is perfect for this if you use Windows) and use that document when you copy and paste to Internet sites. The only other way to correct the problem is to edit the text by hand in your Account Manager.
When I enter HTML in the Band Bio (or other) fields, it clears the HTML after I submit the information.
This function is working as designed. We don't allow the use of HTML on our pages because mistakes in your HTML code can break the pages. We already make enough mistakes on our own with which to annoy our site visitors, so the job is taken! However, you can use bbcode to make links and change the font size and color of text in your text fields. To help you get started with this method, there is a handy help item for bbcode next to every text field where bbcode is available .
I have a different problem and didn't get a solution.
As ever, try our useful Contact Form and give us as much information as you can about the problem so that we can help you out.
I can listen to music just fine for a while, but after a few bands, the page locks up when I press play.
Internet Explorer users may have this problem on the site (and other music sites) after listening to several songs in a row in different flash players. Internet Explorer limits the number of connections it will make to a server to two at a time. This limitation can cause severe problems on modern Web sites as visitors close one player and open another. This is particularly true when using pop up Flash and Windows Media based media players. Internet Explorer 8 is supposed to address this issue, but we have not yet tested it on the site.
We have removed most of the pop up players from our site in the recent site redesign to improve the site experience for Internet Explorer users. If you continue to have this problem with our non-pop up players, we recommend Windows users try the excellent Firefox browser as an alternative.
Some of the links on your menu don't take me to the selected page when I click on them.
Our menu is a javascript-coded drop down menu. Some of the main menu items will give you a submenu to choose from rather than taking you to a linked page. If the submenu does not drop down, you need to enable javascript within your browser. You will also have other problems with features on the site if you have javascript disabled, although we have tried to minimize the amount of browser-side scripting we use on the site.
Can I redistribute song files I download from IndieHeart or play them on my Internet Radio Station?
Our Artists retain all rights on the music they make available for download. Site visitors do not have permission to redistribute, podcast, or broadcast files downloaded from Artist Pages without the permission of the copyright holder. Most Artists have a contact form available on their Artist Page you can use to request permission for use of their music. Others display a Creative Commons license to indicate how you may use their music. If the Artist does not have a contact form available, you may be able to find contact information for the Artist by following the Artist's Web site link.
Can I make your podcasts available for download on my Web site or play them on my own Internet Radio station?
Our podcasts are protected by copyright. We do not use Creative Commons because the music contained in the shows is not generally licensed under Creative Commons. However, you can always link to our podcast pages or podcast feed or distribute our RSS feed on your Web site through a widget or other RSS display without running afoul of any rights limitations. We also don't have any problem with you redistributing our shows through any other method as long as you *do not alter* the shows in any way.
Also, please be aware that broadcasting the shows on your own Internet Radio streams may make you liable for the payment of royalties if you do not already pay them. However, we can extend royalty-free permission for airplay of our shows to our partners per the terms of our license agreement. We'd be happy to talk to you about becoming an IndieHeart partner if you are interested in rebroadcasting our shows.
With no ads on your site, how does IndieHeart pay the bills?
IndieHeart.com ran ads and affiliate programs for approximately 2 years, but ended this effort in 2009 in favor of becoming a fully non-commercial site. We like it better this way.
Originally, we did not anticipate our server expenses outstripping our ability to pay them. However, as we added features (Internet Radio, increased number of streaming artists), we did reach the end of our financial abilities. In late 2010, we drastically cut back the site features to save money and keep the most popular features of the site alive.
