It's Just the "Little Things"...

I'm going to have to say this is rather embarrassing...so...I had this thing that required pain medication for about two weeks. This made me blow off things like the MP3 Download Blog because I was asleep a lot when I was not at work. Having blown if off for so long, I completely forgot about it. Really. I just went utterly brain dead and forgot that I've got this daily habit I need to tend to (on a happier note - I also quit smoking for the past 7 weeks, so I broke a bad habit at the same time!)

Giving away music is a pretty cool habit to have. This is especially true when I can point you to terrific music like the music created by Australian band, The Wells. I completely dig these guys. Their music reflects a broad knowledge of musical genres and the ability to mold all of that into hooky and enjoyable alternative rock songs. Enjoy this one and I promise that I will continue to bring you more...until the next time something distracts me!

A Voice As Smooth As Silk: Ady Ferguson

England's Ady Ferguson has a voice that carries a soulful vocal all the way around the block and back again without breaking a sweat. In addition to his remarkable voice, he writes a fine tune and the CD "Seasons Change" is full of exceptionally strong playing by talented performers.

Highly recommended if you enjoy a soulful pop tune! The entire CD is way underpriced at $2.00 US from Amie Street at the link below. Pick it the rest of the album for pennies while you have the chance!

Lefty Folk Singers Alert: The Therapy Sisters

I very much like the Therapy Sisters. They hail from deep in the heart of Texas, the same place the last US President called home. Fortunately, they are much smarter and more likeable.

The Therapy Sisters also make some extraordinarily fun music, if you enjoy the "deep into folk roots" thing. They have some swing to them, too, with a bit of a thirties feel (not that I was around in the thirties, mind you, for those of you who are wondering about that.)

A lot of their music on the site takes on that George Bush fella, which is so yesterday at this point. So...grab one of their much more timeless tracks instead, "Work Like You Don't Need The Money"...it's all pretty good advice and some some damn fine playing, in any case.

And The Days Go On And On...

The Radio Orphans create stories that require you to fill in the blanks or ask questions that force you to create the story. Either way, their music is seldom tidily categorized.

While I have many favorite Radio Orphan songs, I always enjoy the simplicity of "This Life" and the way it cuts to the chase about the big questions. The song is from their 2006 release, "No Strangers To Exploration". It's a good one.

Do yourself a favor and pick yourself up a few Radio Orphans cuts (they make all of their music available for free download). It is one of those things you appreciate more when you hear it all together. The boys from Minnesota don't do one off "hits" but create a volume of work that reaches beyond the ephemeral.

Tugboat Country: Just Dustin' For Fingerprints

As I often am, I am running behind with the blog, with my life, and with the shows. Sigh. So...without much further ado, I will simply present a good 'ol American rock and roll tune from Washington's Tugboat Country. It ain't what you say about it anyway...it's all about how it makes you feel when you hear it.

Feel good!

Sunday Strange: Underground Song (Mother Earth)

The Web site for Phoenix, Arizona band, Droll, has disappeared from the web, and I haven't heard from the band for years. However, the best thing about the web is that it makes sure that all of the things that once existed remain available for discovery when they are abandoned. (Then again, this may also be the worst thing about the web...there are entire Web sites dedicated to the Mullet hairstyle, after all.)

The mullet aside, one of the things that I have always hoped would happen is that more people discover this odd gem of a song by Droll entitled "Underground Song (Mother Earth)". I have referred to it as a tapestry in the past, but perhaps it is more of an audio crazy quilt - made of scraps in a random arrangement, but somehow it creates a coherent and beautiful whole.

What Could Be Better Than Old School Radio?

Baltimore's Cold Taxi hasn't heard that "school" is now spelled "skool". Apparently, Cold Taxi also have not heard that rock is dead. I say we don't educate them on either score...it would be a great shame, because they serve up bouncy rock with a modern feel. This is danceable stuff with driving guitars and an early indie sensibility.

David Ullman: Just A Little Deja Vu

I'm pleased to claim David Ullman as a local boy here in NE Ohio. I recently heard him open for Rusted Root in one of our fine small-town venues and was disappointed when he left the stage far too early to make way for the main act. I was truly enjoying his strong and melodically dynamic vocal presence and well-structured guitar accompaniment. In addition, he writes a nice song!

I expect David will eventually become better known outside of NE Ohio. Until the time when you can hear him perform anywhere, enjoy this IndieHeart exclusive download of his song "Deja Vu".

I like this one for the acoustic simplicity, melody, harmony, and emotional expressiveness, but if you like something with a bit more punch, you will certainly enjoy some of the more rocked up songs you can find on his artist page.

Also, if you become a listener member of IndieHeart.com during the month of September, you can win a three CD prize, with the option to choose David's CD or EP as one of the CDs.
crashtv: It Could Be So Dangerous...

Crashtv called it quits in early 2009 when lead singer Steve Yeates left after 10+ years fronting the band. Brothers Chris Collins and Peter Dahl-Collins continue to produce and remix music for others under the crashtv banner.

The music they made over the years was heavily influenced by 90s artists like Nine Inch Nails, Muse, and Killing Joke. To me, crashtv's signature and finest moments are found in Chris Collins' think-outside-the-box rhythm guitar work. This cut, from their final CD, Sound Put, is not my favorite (for that, check out the kicky moving to industrial "Fingernail" on the band's page at IndieHeart), but showcases that heavy rock guitar work with an incongruously Pop vocal line. A lot of the music they made was like that. Sadly, the band ended just as they were moving away from reliance on their influences into a distinctive sound built on their individual talents.
